Cheap Gear: Preparing for Eagle Creek to Wahtum Lake

*UPDATE* We cancelled our trip to the Gorge last minute, due to excessively bad weather. We adapted and came up with a new plan of backpacking at Boulder Creek.

I just got back from Dick's Sporting Goods. Loaded up on gear for our upcoming backpacking trip to Eagle Creek. Being a Cheap Camper, I snagged my goods from the clearance bin, namely a pair of Columbia convertible hiking pants on sale for $20, and a Columbia lightweight wicking tank top for $15. I paid full price for a pair of men's high activity long underwear. But, since I am wearing them right now and already I have no regrets I figure it was worth it. It is supposed to get down to 25 degrees in the gorge this weekend and who knows what it will feel like with the wind chill factor. Also, we are visiting Toronto, Ontario next week, where they consider Oregon weather to be "warm" so I'm thinking these are necessary.

I bought some power bars on sale and some of those $.99 hand warmers that activate when you open the package. Truly a lifesaver for winter camping. I also bought a $12 waterproof topo map of the Columbia Gorge... some thing you just can't skimp on. We could get a cheaper, non waterproof topo map from a ranger station but we won't have time. Then, being an "expert" and all, I wrote this article on Winter Camping, based on mine, Phil's, and some other hikers' combined knowledge.

I am so excited to break in my new backpack! Will update Monday morning with pictures.
