Rome Ristorante
March 16
The first thing we did upon arriving in the city is make a bee line for the nearest food place. We found one and stuffed ourselves--- good food, finally!! Our spirits are lifted- emotionally, climate-ly, culturally, and mentally. We love Rome so far. It's like a fog has been lifted from our minds! The UK and Ireland were so dreary compared to the sunshine and passion of the Italians.
The Vatican

While waiting for our hostel to finish being ready we took a stroll down to the Vatican, which is literally about 6 blocks away. We didn't have time to go in yet, but that's on the agenda for tomorrow. St. Peter's Basilica is huge! No pictures or movie scenes have ever done it justice.

We spent the rest of day walking around the beautiful streets of Rome, taking in the sights. It reminds us a lot of Aix-En-Provence and that part of France that we visited last year.

Every building is like a work of art. There are so many statues, and ancient structures! And we haven't even gotten to the Coloseum part of town.
Piazza Tribuni (?)
I'm sure we will have many, many, MANY pictures uploaded by the end of tomorrow. We have three days here and I intend to jam pack them with tourist-y site-seeing.
Ciao!
Me again! Just have to comment on Rome...as it was almost exactly this time of year...if not exactly...back in 1986 that we, Mike-Jan-Sun-Phil were in Rome! At that time it was during Holy Week, and we even got a glimpse of the Pope during a procession. I doubt that Phil remembers, since he was a few days short of 4 years old. Phil's 4th birthday landed on Easter that year, and we celebrated with a picnic in the country side outside of Rome. Your description of the warmth and friendliness of the people is a bit different than I remember. Rome, just outside the Colliseum, was the only place[during our whole year of travels] that some people tried to steal our wallets, right in broad daylight! So be careful! Dad and I continue to enjoy your blog so much. Thanks for taking us along on this adventure. Sorry I missed your call today! Take care...God go with you...and me too. Love, mom/jan
ReplyDeleteYay! Rome! Pizza! Piazza! What not to like? And agree with Jan above, hold on to your wallets! Lots of horror stories. But other than that, enjoy!
